What makes a Microblading Studio?
Having changed locations a few times and always running my studios from home, I have a few tips for anyone wanting to do the same. After all, if I had to fund a premises through the last few years with the pandemic, my business wouldn’t have survived. Its convenient, cost saving and personal. I have a number of clients say they don’t like the salon experience and prefer a more personal atmosphere, which is what I try to create.
How to set up a home microblading studio
First things first, you need a space that doesn’t interrupt on your own personal living space. Whether its separate from your house in a shed (glorified obviously!) or a garage conversion, or even a spare room, as long as you have natural light and electric you can work with it.
Microblading regulations
For microblading you have to be aware of the local councils regulations and Bylaws, I’ve learnt that they all seem to have different expectations and learning the hard way… just because you have a license with North Somerset Council, doesn’t mean that Cornwall Council will accept this license.. you have to apply again. It's costly and time consuming, filling out applications and waiting for them to arrive for the inspection, but when you know the process it's relatively straight forward.
In general they will require a space with hard flooring, so it can be cleaned, no soft furnishings, access to a sink and water for hand washing. They will also need to see your Microblading medical consent forms, aftercare advice and any insurance and waste disposal contracts you have. Depending on where you will be Microblading in the UK, you could require a personal license as well as a premises license, some councils only require one.
Once you have your licence, you’re ready to go and it won’t need to be renewed, no further costs unless you move house etc.
What are the costs involved with Microblading?
Microblading is one of those treatments where you feel like your outgoings on the cost of setting up, products, licensing, insurance etc are all quite high, but once you have it all and you have established your client base, the costs are all quite relative to the treatment prices.
I have run a successful business from home doing this treatment, it definitely has its perks like anything, a few things to consider on the negative side is that you won’t have any colleagues or team mates about, you won’t be in the view of the public as you won’t be able to change the exterior of your property with a sign or anything, so you a re heavily dependant on word of mouth and advertising on social media. Its not for everyone, but it has certainly worked for me over the years, allowing me to create a very successful client base and business.
